Letters of Recommendation

Not all organizations will request Letters of Recommendation, but if they do, you should be ready to provide them. For this reason, it is a good idea for you to ask individuals in advance if they would be willing to provide you with a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation can be provided by former and/or current employers, professors, and colleagues (not friends). Those who you ask to provide a letter of recommendation should know you well enough to be able to speak to your abilities and skillsets.

You can use the same recommendation letter that you used to apply to the Washington DC Program! Email us at washingtonprogram@ucdavis.edu and we can provide it to you upon request.

  • Try to ask at least three weeks in advance.
  • Provide a “resource packet” to your recommender in order to help them write their letter. This should include the position description, your cover letter, and your resume.
  • Inform your recommender of any skills or qualities you would like for them to highlight in their letter.
