Tell us about your internship – what kind of work did you do? What did you find rewarding?

During my internship at the Political Violence Lab, I had the opportunity to work on several research projects related to political violence and shadow topics. One of the main projects I was involved in focused on understanding the underlying causes of political violence in specific regions or countries. We conducted reviews, gathered and analyzed data, and examined historical case studies to identify patterns and factors contributing to political violence. I gained valuable research skills, and my ability to critically analyze complex data improved. Our research findings were used to inform policy recommendations and strategies aimed at preventing and mitigating the impact of political violence in various regions.

Share an exciting memory from your internship – something unexpected, an accomplishment, someone you met.

I worked on the interview team and followed a project that aimed to assess the effectiveness of conflict and peace-building initiatives in post-conflict societies. This involved conducting surveys, interviews, and data analysis to evaluate the impact of various interventions on reducing violence and promoting reconciliation. I also assisted in data collection. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to interview many of those people, so it was very exciting.

Did your internship lead to any opportunities?

Yes, it did. I was able to learn about the CITI training in order to work on research projects and explore the "shadow topics" of the Political Violence Lab. I was offer to continue being a member of the lab and as of right now I still am.

Share a story about something special you did in Washington – an event you attended, a place you went, an exciting talk, etc.

I loved visiting The Lincoln Memorial. I would run there at night and it's beautiful; that's one of the things I miss from being in Washington DC.

How has living in the nation's capital for a quarter changed you?

It was my first time on the East Coast, thus, it had a big impact on me. I enjoyed living there for the summer, as Washington DC is such a lively city and there is always something happening, so I had a lot of fun! It also made me realize how much I love smaller towns and why I love Davis; I learned that I like to visit cities, but love living in towns.

Do you have any advice for future UCDC students?
