Tell us about your internship - what kind of work did you do?
I worked as a research intern with the Political Violence Lab. One of my tasks involved gathering information and organizing it so that it could be accessed for study and used in our final research paper. Additionally, I went to think tank events to network with panelists and attendees with the purpose of recruiting foreign affairs professionals to interview for the lab. I was also involved in conducting those interviews! The interview’s purpose was learning from the individuals and finding out if and how well the news media reported the international affairs and “shadow topics”. Another task that I had was finding and scheduling interviews with journalists that cover sea migration worldwide.
Have your career goals changed as a result of your internship?
My career goals have not changed, but this internship has given me an opportunity to be a co-author of a research paper. My supervisor also offered to write a letter of recommendation, which will be crucial when I start job hunting.
Tell us about an exciting memory from your internship!
An exciting memory from my internship was seeing all or data collection come together in the final research paper, and how the team's hard work paid off!
Did your internship lead to any opportunities?
I gained knowledge on how to use Qualtrics, which is a great tool for creating and distributing surveys, gathering data, and doing statistical analysis. Additionally, I had the chance to gain new knowledge from professionals on international affairs. Interviewing them not only allowed me to step out of my comfort zone but also establish contacts within the professional setting.
