Tell us about your internship – what kind of work did you do? What did you find rewarding?
My internship with the Madison Group kept me very busy. They sent me to events every week that related to our clients. I would then have to provide a memo and any relevant material. It was rewarding, and my work felt meaningful to the client.
Share an exciting memory from your internship – something unexpected, an accomplishment, someone you met.
One of my supervisors hosted a private welcoming event for the incoming California Senator Laphonza Butler. I was able to meet her, Alex Padilla, and one of Biden's advisors, Stephen Benjamin. It was amazing to take pictures and have conversations with them.
Did your internship lead to any opportunities?
My internship did not lead to any direct opportunities, but the relationships I built with my supervisors were extremely valuable. They offered to write me letters of recommendation and contact them if I am ever back in DC. to listen to President Biden speak in person.
Share a story about something special you did in Washington – an event you attended, a place you went, an exciting talk, etc.
On Veterans Day, I was able to go to the Arlington Cemetery and listen to President Biden give a speech. It is an annual event with speakers and the Air Force Band all honoring our Veterans. The highlight was being able to listen to President Biden speak in person.
How has living in the nation's capital for a quarter changed you?
It gave me more confidence in myself to be successful when I graduate. After working almost full-time with my internship and living in a new city, I feel a lot better about my abilities in post-graduate life.
Do you have any advice for future UCDC students?
Work hard in finding to find an internship. There are a lot of good internships, and so many of them offer amazing experiences and opportunities. Also, explore as much of DC as you can, there are plenty of new things to do every weekend.
