Tell us about your internship. What kind of work did you do? What did you find rewarding?
I was a research intern for TAPS in which I also assisted in helping displaced Afghan citizens in coming into the US. We also fundraised by selling Afghan bracelets created by widowed women from Afghanistan in which all the proceeds went back to them. I really enjoyed being a part of this non - profit organization as it made me feel like I was making a difference and I was able to meet various politicians such as Nancy Pelosi, Congressman, the Ambassador of Afghanistan and CEOs of non - profits.
Have your career or life goals changed as a result of your internship? If so, how?
I always wanted to be a part of public service in which my experience with this internship supported my career goals even more so. By getting a feel of helping others I am now confident I would enjoy a career in public service and contribute to a cause bigger than myself.
Share an exciting memory from your internship – something unexpected, an accomplishment, someone you met.
I've had many great experiences while in D.C however meeting Nancy Pelosi and taking a photo with her after she gave my boss a medal at a non - profit dinner event felt very rewarding.
Did your internship lead to any opportunities?
I was able to network with many contractors and CEOs which allowed me to gain advice from them and how to possibly create my own NGO in the future.
Share a story about something special you did in Washington – an event you attended, a place you went, an exciting talk, etc.
On my first day for my internship I had the opportunity to attend the Embassy of Afghanistan Dinner event in which I was able to hear the Madam Ambassador speak about her experience as the events unfolded in country. Her speech was very moving as she told her people to continue to stay strong and keep the Afghan culture alive.
How has living in the nation’s capital for a quarter changed you?
It allowed me to be confident in my ability to work and speak with various people of all ethnicities as well as see firsthand how politics work in DC.
Do you have any advice for future UCDC students?
No matter your internship, it's up to you to make the most of it.
