Tell us about your internship and experience in Washington D.C.
As an intern at the Fed, I had the opportunity to work with Senior Economists on various research projects, meet (former) Chairman Bernanke and several Governors, attend a number of conferences and seminars and had access to great minds for my research project. The UCDC program coordinators and my supervisor at the Fed have been invaluable mentors and the experience is something that I reflect back on often. My roommates became great friends, I grew to love the city, and I left appreciative for the opportunity and with newfound confidence.
How did your UCDC program experience help you in your professional life?
Today I work as a Senior Underwriting Analyst for the nation’s largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer. I work closely with underwriters and management at all levels in the risk analysis and pricing of accounts and I communicate information to healthcare providers and administrators, all of which the UCDC Program and my internship have greatly prepared me for. I enjoy my position, especially because it offers endless educational opportunities, in both the insurance and healthcare arenas. I am lucky to have found an employer who I enjoy working for and who offers educational reimbursement which has afforded me the opportunity to pursue a Masters of Jurisprudence in Health Law. With a busy work schedule, it is taking all of the discipline that I have. Discipline I may not otherwise have if not for the UCDC program.
Do you have anything to say to future UCDC program participants?
From start to finish, the UCDC program prepares you for life outside of undergrad. It’s not just about the internship, but the preparation that is involved and what it takes to get there. Once you are there, it is about making the most out of the experience as a whole; working, networking, studying, having fun and exploring the city, and your ability to manage all that and more while maintaining your sanity. It is one of the most rewarding adventures I’ve embarked on, and it has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today.
