Questions About Eligibility Requirements (UCSC)

  • In what years can students participate?
  • Third-year students and fourth-year standing students (based on completed units). 
  • Is there a GPA requirement?
  • Yes. students should have a 3.0 or higher GPA however, some exceptions may be made.
  • Can undocumented students participate?
  • Yes, undocumented students are eligible to participate!

Questions About the Program Application (UCSC)

  • How can I access the application?
  • The online application can be accessed on our website along with instructions on how to complete it at the following link: How to Apply.
  • What is the application process?
  • Create an account at https://sis.ucdc.edu using your campus email address (@ucsc.edu). You will receive a confirmation email. The link provided in your confirmation email should simultaneously allow you to verify your identity, and begin the official application.

    Fill out all required information in the following application tabs: BASIC INFORMATION, ACADEMIC INFORMATION, STATISTICAL, ADDRESS, and EMERGENCY CONTACT. After clicking “save progress” at the bottom of the page, click on the next red tab at the top of the page to advance to the next category.

    Under the ACADEMIC INFORMATION tab, upload your resume, statement of purpose, unofficial transcript (transcripts obtained through your my.ucsc.edu portal), and letter of recommendation. Your statement of purpose will serve as an example of your writing; no additional writing sample is required. You can submit your letter of recommendation with the rest of your application materials in SIS. If your letter writer would prefer to email your letter of recommendation, you may send it to Ashley Bayman at globallearning@ucsc.edu.
  • What criteria is used to evaluate my application for admission into UCDC?
  • Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Admission is competitive. To be eligible for consideration, students must: be a junior or senior, recommended 3.0 GPA or higher, have a strong academic record, provide a strong statement of purpose, and provide a strong letter of recommendation (if possible from faculty rather than TAs or employers).
  • To what terms can I apply?
  • Students may apply to the Fall, Winter, Spring quarters as well as the summer term.
  • Where can I get help with my application and/or my resume prior to applying to UCDC?
  • For help with your resume and/or cover letter prior to applying to the UCDC program, you may reach out to the UC Santa Cruz Career Center.
  • Do I need to submit a letter of recommendation with my application?
  • Yes, you will need to submit one letter of recommendation with your application.  Letters of recommendation from University faculty are preferred over letters from TAs or employers. Letters of Recommendation may be submitted with your online application or by emailing it to globallearning@ucsc.org.

Questions about Academic Units (UCSC)

  • How many units will I receive for my UCDC seminar?
  • Students who successfully complete their UCDC seminar will receive 5 units.
  • Is the seminar for a letter grade or is it pass/no pass?
  • Each student may choose if they would like to receive a letter grade or if they would like to take their seminar as a pass/no pass seminar.
  • How many units will I receive for my internship?
  • Students who successfully complete their internship with a positive supervisor evaluation will receive 7 units.
  • Are the internship units for a letter grade or are they pass/no pass?
  • The internship units are pass/no pass.
  • How many hours a week must I work in order to earn the internship units?
  • Students must work at 24 to 32 hours a week in order to successfully earn academic units for their internship.

Ashley Bayman (she/her/ella) is an Ohio native who completed a dual B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish from The Ohio State University. During her undergraduate, she studied abroad in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina and discovered a passion for international education and travel. After graduating, Ashley took a gap year to travel to 30 countries across Latin America and Europe. It was during this life-changing journey that Ashley became committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds benefit from the academic, social, and professional advantages of international education. She went on to earn an M.A. in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Prior to joining the UCSC Global Learning team, Ashley served as an international education program leader in Mexico and Spain.
