Tell us about your internship - what kind of work did you do?

During my internship I had the chance to interview foreign affairs professionals and journalists to gather information about policy impacts and news reporting on migration and refugee issues. We used this data to write and submit an academic research paper on the patterns of migration compared to the frequency of reporting on those instances in the news.

Tell us about an exciting memory from your internship!

I attended a think tank event one day and spoke with a foreign correspondent from a major news source during the reception. (*can’t actually name the news source because they requested anonymity) I invited him to interview with the lab and was able to interview him to gain valuable insight on his experiences with reporting internationally!

Did your internship lead to any opportunities?

It gave me the opportunity to attend any think tank event of my choice and learn so many new applications and skills! (Overleaf and scientific writing, R programming, professional interviewing, data analysis).

Share a story about something special you did in Washington!

I was in DC during a presidential debate. I went to a restaurant with a group of friends and the environment made it feel like we were watching a sports game rather than a debate!

How has living in the nation's capital for a quarter changed you?

Living in DC for a quarter has been such an inspiration. The people are so motivated and intellectual, and the sights are so beautiful no matter how many times you walk past the same place. I wish everyone could take the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in the nation’s capital!

What advice would you like to share with future UCDC participants?

Try new restaurants and cafes! DC’s food scene is so diverse and there’s amazing options that are walkable from the UCDC building. Follow Instagram accounts like @clockoutdc and @yourdcbestie to stay updated on events in the area. A lot of them are free! Don’t underestimate the amount of walking you’ll do. Pack accordingly!
