Networking 101

Building Your Professional Network

Your time in the Washington Program is more than an internship; it's a launchpad for your career. Building a professional network is one of the most valuable investments you can make during your quarter in D.C. A strong network can open doors to future opportunities, provide mentorship, and offer invaluable industry insights. Below are strategies for making meaningful connections, both in-person and online.

In-Person Networking in D.C.

Washington, D.C. is a city built on relationships. As a program participant, you are in a unique position to meet influential professionals across every field.

  • Conduct Informational Interviews: Reach out to professionals in fields that interest you and request a brief 15-20 minute "informational interview" to learn about their career path and organization. People are often generous with their time, especially for students.
  • Attend Professional Events: Keep an eye out for panels, lectures, and networking events hosted by think tanks, non-profits, and professional organizations. These are excellent opportunities to learn and meet people.
  • Leverage Your Alumni Network: Connect with UC Davis and other UC alumni living and working in the D.C. area. They are often eager to help fellow Aggies succeed.
  • Always Be Prepared: Dress professionally, have a concise "elevator pitch" about your interests and goals, and always follow up with a thank-you note or email after a significant conversation.

Building Your Online Presence with LinkedIn

In today's professional world, your online presence is your digital handshake. LinkedIn is an essential tool for building and maintaining your network before, during, and after your time in D.C.

  • Craft a Professional Profile: Your LinkedIn profile should be complete and polished. Include a professional headshot, a compelling summary, and detailed descriptions of your work, volunteer, and academic experiences.
  • Connect with Purpose: When you send a connection request, always include a personalized note. Mention that you are a UC Davis Washington Program student and how you found their profile or why you would like to connect.

* Engage with Content: Don’t just collect connections. Actively engage with your network by liking, commenting on, and sharing relevant articles and posts. This keeps you visible and shows you are engaged in your field.

  • Follow Organizations of Interest: Follow companies, government agencies, and non-profits that you admire. This will keep you informed about their work and potential internship or job opportunities.

Networking is a skill that grows with practice. By combining strategic in-person efforts with a polished online presence, you will leave the Washington Program with not just experience, but also a robust network of contacts to support your future endeavors.
