Washington Program: Internship Application Process

The Internship Application Process

Follow the steps below to start the process of finding an internship that's right for you! Send us a message here if you have questions or have suggestions for ways to make the process smoother.

Step 1] Complete the entire "Finding an Internship in Washington DC" worksheet. This will give you a good overview of all of the relevant opportunities in DC and the resources available to you. You should expect to spend at least two hours completing the worksheet. ALL BLANKS on the sheet should be filled in before your initial advising meeting.

Step 2] Select one of the internships you listed in the last step of the "Finding and Internship..." worksheet and draft a cover letter and resume for it.

Step 3] Have your initial one-on-one advising meeting with Sara, Cheryl, or Sandra. Bring your completed worksheet and your draft cover letter and resume. At this meeting, they'll go over your worksheet with you and help you narrow down your internship choices. They'll also give you feedback and revisions for your cover letter and resume.

Step 4] Compile your final list of places you'll be applying to and create a list detailing what application documents each organization will require as well as how your application should be submitted. Also, revise your cover letter and resume and sent it back to your advisor for additional feedback.

Step 5] Once your advisor has approved your initial cover letter and resume, create a set tailored to each of the organizations you'll be applying to. Consult with the DC Program student advisors (223 South Hall, weekdays 10am-5pm) if you want help with your additional cover letters and resumes.

Step 6] Start sending out your internship applications according to the instructions here.

Step 7] Follow up with your organizations one weekafter you submit your applications or one week after you hear from your advisor that she or he forwarded your application, whichever is later. Keep your advisor posted [Sara; Cheryl; Sandra].
