Washington Program: Graduate Students

"No place in the United States offers graduate students as many research opportunities. In addition, the Washington Program inspired me by giving me the chance to work with some of UC Davis' best undergraduate students and faculty members."
—UC Davis Washington Program Graduate Fellow

Graduate and Professional Student Opportunities

The Washington Program offers two different types of opportunities for graduate and professional students. Graduate Fellows spend the entire academic year living in DC, working as TAs for the undergraduate research seminar, and conducting their own research. Graduate Summer Interns are awarded a stipend to help support them while they work at a summer internship in the Washington DC area. See below for application and deadline information.

Graduate Fellows

Positions are open to graduate students from all UC Davis departments whose doctoral research would significantly benefit from a period of residence in Washington, DC and who have shown excellence as teaching assistants. Students from Political Science, History, Economics, Sociology, Spanish, English, Human Development, and Agricultural Economics have been graduate fellows for the program.

Applications are accepted for the full academic year. The positions are a combination of pre-doctoral research fellowships and teaching assistantships for the UC Davis Washington undergraduate program. The undergraduate program operates on a full year academic calendar - Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters. Graduate Fellows are provided an office, computer and some services in the UC Washington Center (located at 1608 Rhode Island Ave., NW). Depending on space available, graduate students may live in the Washington Center building, or they can make other living arrangements in the area.

Stipend

The current nine-month academic year stipend for the Washington Program Graduate Fellows is $21,391. The additional stipend (above the standard UC Davis Teaching Assistant salary) is intended to defray some of the higher costs of living in or near Washington, D.C. Graduate fellows also receive a $500 travel stipend. During some years, the Washington Program has partially or totally defrayed the cost of housing for Graduate Fellows.

Eligibility

Positions are open to graduate students from all departments and graduate programs, with preference for those with significant teaching experience in the social sciences or humanities. Applications are particularly encouraged from students whose doctoral research would significantly benefit from a period of residence in Washington, DC.

Applicants must be graduate students who have not exceeded university regulations on the number of quarters of TA eligibility. Some preference is given to applications for the full academic year, primarily for reasons of continuity in the undergraduate teaching program, but the Program will consider applications for a shorter period of time.
