In addition to providing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, the Washington Program also provides opportunities for campus faculty to spend from a week to a year in Washington, DC as either a Faculty Fellow or through a Faculty Research Grant.

Faculty Fellows

The UC Davis Washington Program has one faculty fellow position per quarter designed for UC Davis faculty from any discipline whose research would significantly benefit from a period of residence in Washington, DC. While in residence, faculty fellows are provided with an office, a computer, staff support, and other services. Fellows teach a 4-unit upper division seminar in the Washington Program's Undergraduate Academic Program. Each seminar is composed of 25 motivated and bright students from the eight participating UC campuses. Previous seminars include:

  • The Presidency
  • Cultural History of Washington, DC
  • Media and Politics
  • Congress at Work
  • The Rhetoric of American Art
  • Issues in Women's Political History
  • Contemporary Controversies in American Science and Technology Policy
  • Health Politics and Health Policy
  • American Landscapes and Places
  • Shakespeare in DC
  • Washington Ethics

Washington Program Faculty Fellows receive departmental teaching credit and regular salary, subject to agreement by their department chairs. The department will be compensated by the Washington Program at a rate of $6,000 per course. For a one-quarter Fellowship, the department will be compensated for one course; for a full academic year Fellowship, the department will be compensated for up to four courses. Fellows will receive a travel stipend to help defray expenses and are provided with an office and computer at the Washington Center. During some years, the Washington Program has partially or totally defrayed the cost of housing for Faculty Fellows.

Faculty Research Grants

UC Davis faculty from any department and college can apply for Washington Program Research Grants. These grants provide support for archival research and research in other collections, scientific research, activities of participant-policymaker interviews, museum and cultural research, and development of grant proposals and research-related campus programs. A call for proposals is sent out annually; additional applications are considered throughout the year, pending availability of funds.

Our overall goal is to provide support for research projects that utilize the array of resources in the Washington area including historical archives, other collections in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences, as well as access to policy-makers for research-oriented interviews. All activities must take place in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area.

Application Procedures

Because we have limited funding for research grants, we will consider proposals for individual faculty research projects up to $2000.

Should you wish to consider submitting a proposal for additional funds, such as co-sponsoring a research conference at the UC Washington Center or for a long-term collaborative research project involving the UC Davis Washington Program as co-sponsor with faculty and/or units on campus, including support for the development of major extramural funding, please contact Larry Berman, Director.

Application procedures and the deadline for application are available in the Faculty Research Grant Call, updated yearly. The deadline for applications for 2008-2009 is May 1, 2008.
