UC Washington Center
Students live in two bedroom apartments in the new, state of the art UC Washington Center, located at 1608 Rhode Island Avenue (on Scott Circle). Over two hundred restaurants, museums, monuments and sights, including the Capital Mall are within walking distance. The efficient, economical Washington Metro (designed by and similar to the San Francisco BART system) has two stations within 3 blocks of the Center. Situated half a mile from The White House in the heart of the city, the Center offers fully furnished apartments with fully equipped kitchens and microwaves. Students can take advantage of cable TV in each apartment and high speed Internet connections at every bedside. The Center also includes a fitness center, a computer lab, and two laundry rooms. The Center also allows students to check out additional items like baking supplies, DVDs, a DVD player, shopping carts, etc. for up to 24 hours.Housing Contract
Students that are accepted into the Washington Program are required to live at the UC Washington Center (no exceptions) and are required to sign a housing contract. The housing contract is a legally binding agreement.Amenities
The UC Washington Center has many amenities – including a recreation room (with a big screen TV, DVD, etc.), a large outdoor deck for recreation and a fitness area for the private use of residence tenants. In addition, there is also a large, upscale YMCA across the street from the Center that offers reasonable short-term rates for students ($59/month).The Center has all the latest technological advances and a computer lab for residence use. For teaching purposes, the Center’s facilities include a 90-seat auditorium, a 300 person capacity multipurpose room, four seminar rooms and three conference rooms.
Check-In Procedures
Please plan your arrival in Washington, DC so that you can check-in to the Center during the dates and times specified on you cohort's calendar.At check-in you will be required to show a picture ID. Every student participant will receive a Capital Card. This card works as a debit card and will allow you to use the laundry machines and printers in the computer lab. You must use cash to add to the value of the card.
You must attend the mandatory Residential Orientation on Monday. There will be a $50 fine imposed if you do not attend this orientation. The Academic Orientation in the Center’s Multipurpose Room is also mandatory.

About the Rooms
Students live and learn in the Center. A typical two-bedroom student apartment (shared with 3 other participants) is fully furnished and includes a fully equipped kitchen, cable TV in the living area, and a high-speed Internet connection at every bedside. Students can shop for food and other necessities at several food and national chain stores within easy walking distance of the Center. Each bed has a TwinXL mattress. Some bedrooms include beds with drawers underneath while others have bunk beds with dressers provided. Some rooms also have hangers that were left behind from previous students. Please note: You must furnish your own pillows, bed linens, bath and kitchen towels, and potholders. Please click here to see the packing list.Your room assignment will be provided when you check into the UC Washington Center. There will be four (4) individuals (2 in each bedroom) per apartment. The living room has a couch, coffee table, chair, dining table and chairs, and a television.

Security
The safety of our students in Washington, DC is a top priority of the Program. Please read about the UC Center building features below and contact program staff with any questions or concerns.Building Access
The UC Washington Center has developed a system of building security, which includes a card key for access and picture identification. This system is in place to help ensure your safety while at the Center. Also, Washington, DC as the Nation's Capital and a city of global importance is a focus for events, which may require you to prove your right to access the Center and the surrounding neighborhood. Your Center picture identification ensures that you will have this access.Guest Policy
The UC Washington Center has a specific guest policy to help maintain the safety and security of the Center. According to the policy, there can only be a maximum of two guests per room and a one-time $20 must be paid. More details on the guest policy will be provided during the mandatory orientation.Card Key Access
The front door of the building serves as main access for our residents, faculty, staff and visitors. Center residents will receive a card key that provides access to the building's main entrance and floors that are available for their use. You will be required to carry this card key with you whenever you leave your apartment. Under normal circumstances the building is unlocked during the hours of 7:30 a.m. -6:30 p.m. M-F. At all other times you will need your card key to enter the building. The card key is required at all times to use the elevators and exit the stairwells.All guests to the Center must sign-in at the Security Desk and will be issued a Visitor's ID. There are areas within the building (including office space on floors 2 and 3) that have limited public hours of access. An appropriately coded card key is required for after hours access to these areas. The UC Washington Center reserves the right to close the building to any non-resident or guest and to ask them to leave the building at any time.
UC Washington Center Picture Identification Card
A UC Washington Center picture ID is provided to all residents, faculty and staff at the start of their time at the Center. Faculty and staff are required to wear the ID card while in the building. Residents, faculty and staff are required to carry their card key and Washington Center picture ID when leaving the building. The Washington Center picture ID card is required for re-entry into the Center and must be shown to the Security Duty Officer upon re-entry to the building.
